In the last post I reviewed Arcane Companion in regards to Shades of Darkness setting of Scarthen World. I mentioned that in my opinion runes would generally not be available in this setting.
First, it has been hundreds of years since humans were able to make paper. Certainly, some sort of parchment can be made but it has little practical use, as free people are constantly fighting either the Ulpir, their servants, or other forces of Unlife.
Second, magic was lost for a long time, only preserved by ancient religions that believed in magic. It is implied that magic was restored to the world after the Invasion. Then, any runes from the time that magic worked would be found in museums (most of them certainly destroyed or deteriorated to the point of ruin). The ability to make them would have been totally lost.
I could see elves or other Fay Folk, or perhaps the Dragons or some Ulpir (if any older than Valmoth Lucard exist) to have retained the knowledge of runes. That begs a question: when and why did the Fay Folk and Dragons disappear? Did they really disappear, or did they only go to hiding, like they are hiding now from the Taint? These are some questions I wish to devise an answer for later.
Game mechanic consequences to Shades of Darkness for Rolemaster
- Spell list Rune Mastery is not available.
- The skill Read Runes is not available.
- Spell list Organic Ways (Alchemist spell list) is not available. This list has spells to create Rune Paper, among other things. In fact, none of the alchemist spell lists are available for typical player characters.* Smithing is a mundane, albeit extremely important, craft for inhabitants of Ulmerica.
* There is an Ulpir smith, Balathar, partially detailed in Shades of Darkness. It is conceivable that he might know some Alchemist spell lists, at least the ones of working with steel and making weapons and armor.
